Nissan Motor Co. is recalling 140,582 of its Altima cars for model year 2007 because the air filter can catch fire if a hot object is drawn into it, Japanese carmaker.
The memory of best-selling car in the automaker over the United States affects Altima cars with a 2.5-liter four cylinders. This was brought to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration before the automaker began notifying owners of 3 July. The automaker added four fires were recorded in February and March.
The filter is replaced, which can ignite if something hot such as cigarette ash enters through the vehicle fresh air intake valve, Nissan. An air deflector also will be installed to prevent accumulation debris in the filter.
The Altima accounted for 140,253, or 26 percent of Nissan sales in the U.S. this year through June. The model was the ninth in sales among all cars and light trucks in the U.S. during the period.
The recall affects Altimas built from September 25th through May 11, Nissan in Smyrna, Tennessee plant, and of 30 October through May 11 at its Canton, Mississippi, center, the Japanese automaker said the federal security agency. Vehicles under warranty, the automaker said.
Tony Pearson, a spokeswoman for Nissan in Nashville, Tennessee-based U.S. unit, declined to say how much the recall will cost the automaker. The Japanese automaker expects to notify all owners of Oct. 1, said in an interview.
The fourth generation Altima was launched in the New York Auto Show on 12 April 2006. It is the first product line to use the smaller Nissan D platform, with a front new and improved rear suspension. The wheelbase is an inch shorter than the third generation Altima, but interior space is mostly unchanged. The Maxima and Murano will continue in the FF-L platform larger.
