What wood When? A simple guide to choosing hardwood and softwood?
Beginning with the basics, and we all know that wood from trees, but there are some other basic facts. Firstly you may know of two distinct groups called hardwoods and softwoods. The strange thing is that All hardwoods are not necessarily hard, and add to the confusion, not all softwoods are soft, in fact, some hardwoods are softer than some woods Soft!

Take the popular wood used for building model ships and airplanes, to remember what it was called, yes, wood balsa, one of the softest and lightest woods available. Balsa is a hardwood. The yew tree produces a very hard wood, the fact is probably as tough yew as one of the hardest, but in reality Yew is a softwood. You are probably wondering how or where the terms are confusing terms originate? Well usually wood from broad-leaved trees and conifers are associated with fir trees.

Popular hardwood used in DIY and construction projects include mahogany, birch, ash, oak and teak.
